Fire Design Extinguisher

Posted by: [Pierrot²] In: Divers et bazar

extinguisher_1

If you’re like me you probably have no fire extinguisher at home and never really considered getting one. And if you do have one, it’s most likely to be hidden in a closet or under the sink waiting for the big day to come. Well you’ll maybe change your mind: The french company Fire Design takes a new look at home security devices with these cool extinguisher. Not only to be compact and available in a wide range of eye-catching designs, they are also equipped with smoke-detectors, making protection more pro active than ever. Price starts at 95 euros. And if you believe safety (and design) has no price you can also order a 100% customized model, just to make sure you don’t have the same as someone else.

WiiSpray

Posted by: [Pierrot²] In: Technology

WiiSpray is the thesis project of a German students group. I don’t know if they plan on becoming rich now or later (they’re looking for partners) but i think this is just a great idea! With the help of a wii remote suited in a fancy, can look-alike enclosure you’ll be soon able to graph like pros, in your living. Change colors, caps, background but also save, share and undo: it’s like MS paint on steroids. Oh and yeah, it’s platform independant: the software behind uses adobe flash and the wiimote connect almost any bluetooth! Hope we’ll get that shipping before christmas :p you can track updates on their blog

Nesciobrug

That’s the bridge of doom i cross twice a day to reach the center with my bike. It links iJburg to the north of Diemen. Necio, in latin, means “i don’t know”. Did they pick that because they were short on ideas? answer here (dutch culture inside).

Still stichin’

Posted by: [Pierrot²] In: My Dam(n) life

I re-installed Hugin, an awesome (and free) panorama builder! I used this software for quite a long time (see my flickr) and i have to say it’s still my favorite. It automagicaly creates control points and merge the pics, all you need to do is to crop the ouput! Being in a photo mood these days, i’ll hopefully have time and inspiration to build more panos in the upcoming weeks…

The Funken Sunday

Posted by: [Pierrot²] In: Culture|Divers et bazar

Back from Schruns in Austria, i would like to introduce you to one of the tradition taking place in the Montafon valley: burning down the Funken. This event takes place at the end of the Carnival week.

In the past there used to be several Funken put up and burned down on nearly every hamlet. Today the Funken is skillfully build by the Funken guild of Vandans. Their Funken maybe isn’t the biggest one, but it’s the only original Montafon Funken. It’s made of one-metre long pieces of wood, no nails are used and it’s build crosswise around a fir tree which is 15 to 20-metres long.

On top of the tree there is a Funken witch. It’s filled with gunpowder and it’s the highlight of the festival when it explodes with a big bang. Burning down the Funken on the one hand leads to the thaw and on the other hand, according to old traditions, burning down the witch drives out the evil. In Vandans the Funken is already build on the previous day (on Saturday) above the church and it’s closely guarded all night long so nobody is able to burn it down just for fun before the actual event.

On Saturday from 4.30 p. m. the Funkenblättle (Funken newspaper), issued by the Funken guild, is sold from door to door. In the newspaper last year’s village events are commented on in a funny way.

On Sunday at 7 p. m. the Funken is burned down during a ceremony accpomanied by the music of the Vandans Harmoniemusik and ironic carnival speeches of the Funken chancellor. Children with torches are also part of this nice traditional event.

De Drie Graefjes?

Posted by: [Pierrot²] In: Address book

Finding good and healthy food in Amsterdam can sometimes be tricky! If you happen to be in the Dam area, you may want to stop at De Drie Graefjes?. This lunchroom, located just behind the Nieuwe Kerk, is one of my favorites. What i love most is the cozy and relaxing atmosphere, the place is clean and bright, generally not too crowded. You can easily forget that you’re just on the corner to Dam square. With a large choice of sandwiches, homemade burgers and salads (we’re still in holland, heh), all the food is fresh and outrageously good !! Definitely worth a try.

Outlook for this month

Posted by: [Pierrot²] In: Hangout

Route du Rock #13

Events and things to do this month:

Vibrate
Asian Dub Foundation is playing this saturday at Melkweg. I’ve seen them once in Paris and almost turned deaf after the show, i’m looking forward to break my eardrums again.

Go to the church
Justice is coming in town! Famous in france i’m not sure how big it is here. They’ve been on tour around the world with the show ‘a cross the universe’ and finally ends up at Melkweg on the the 14th. Also on the line up: Dj Medhi, Busy-P and So-Me. That should be quality electro, starting 11pm!

Smoke a join
Pot raggae lovers: Steel Pulse is playing at Melkweg on Nov 26th and it’s indeed gonna be a ‘high’ time.

Go back to the roots
The Roots are on tour and will stop by the Paradiso on Dec 8th and 9th. The crew from Philadelphia released an album in april called Rising Down. Well known for it’s live instrumentation and jazzy influences we may ear some good hip hop that night.

Play some guitar
Everlast, the white boy. Known for it’s folk-influenced Rap, he was the front man of House Of Pain for a long and now works with others on the project La Coka Nostra. he will be at Paradiso Melkweg on Dec 9th.

The John Butler Trio

Posted by: [Pierrot²] In: My Dam(n) life

The John Butler Trio c’est mon groupe prefere !

Home sweet home

Posted by: [Pierrot²] In: Divers et bazar

Bonjour. Cocorico !
